SEM Blog Assignment # 4 (25 points)

Why the fat guy should lose his privilege

Considering those troubling statistics, Advertising Age's headline this week is welcome news: "Weight Watchers Picks a New Target: Men." The story details how the nation's biggest diet company is using the NBA playoffs to launch its first male-focused advertising campaign. Sounds great - except for one thing: Why only now?

This is a significant question in a country whose debilitating weight problem is more male than female - and "more" means a heckuva lot more. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, almost 70 percent of men are overweight, as compared with 52 percent of women. Yet, somehow, 90 percent of the commercial-weight-loss industry's clients are female, and somehow, this industry hasn't seen males as a viable business. How can that be?

  1. The three main points are the target market, why they chose men, and the effect it might have on some people. One of the three main points I think is interesting is that they are targeting men instead of women. I think it’s also kind of weird, I think women need more of that motivation instead of men. I don’t really see any overweight men crying and walking around saying they are fat, they just kind of keep to themselves. A woman would be very insecure and do all these things to lose weight.
I think that it’s not really a good idea to market during the NBA playoffs. Maybe the producers were implying that most men will sit at home and watch the games (which is very likely), but it’s not going to make them get off the couch and start jogging 2 laps. Either way, men are not going to care that’s why they aren’t even attempting. I feel like, if the person isn’t even trying to lose weight, why should you even bother persuading them to? It is their body and their life so you should let them be.

  2. Paragraph #1
the article i just read was about how weight watchers is starting to advertise towards men. they are saying that even though they target towards men, 90% of their costumers are women. also their is a greater % of male overweight/obesity than there is women. also another problem is how society allows overweight and obese men to become famous actors because its funner since they are fat but it doesnt work the same way for females.
    Paragraph#2
i personally think that weight watchers advertising during the NBA playoffs is a very good idea. the reason i think its a good idea is because most of the audience for the NBA are males. so by weight watchers advertising during the NBA playoffs they might get the male % who use weight watchers up. over all i think that this idea by weight watchers has a very good chance to work. those are my thoughts on weight watchers advertising during the NBA playoffs.

  3. This article is about the idea that men should lose weight as well as women. It describes how females are subjected to be thin but men aren't. It tlkas about how overweight men can be on television while no overweight woman would ever get on television. It also talks about how overweight men dominate politics while overweight women would never be taken seriously in politics. I think the most important point is when the article mentions females are subjected to lose weight and men aren't. I think its the most important topic because it will cause many arguments over who should or has the responsibility to lose weight between men and women.

I dislike this marketing strategy. I don't believe that many men will pay attention to the commercials. Although, I do agree with advertising during the NBA playoffs. The advertisements are bound to get some viewing since they are being advertised during the NBA playoffs. However, I dislike the strategy because I believe men will just ignore it. Men do not care as much as females do about staying thin or in shape. Im not saying men dont care, just not as many do as females. Overall, I believe advertising during the NBA playoffs is a good idea, but the overall advertisement will not be succesful.

  4. The article is about wieght watchers advertising during the NBA playoffs. In the article is explains the obese men are acepted much better than overwieght women. It gives examples of this problem throughout the article. It says the male comedians are much more popular than female ones. They also bring up polotics and how large men are always the headline while females are not. The reason women have been the targwet markwet is becuase they are expected to be perfect just like in the commercials while men are not. That is why women have been the target for wieght lose companys. Finally they are trying to incorperate men into this advertising becuase there are alot more men overwieght then women.

This is a great idea, for wieght watchers. Advertising during the playoffs is smart becuase the marjority watching the games are men. They may see the commmercial and think its a great idea, so they can get back in shape and play basketball as well. This is a perfect stratagy and now the whole country is included in this advertising. Though many men will not even consider it, someone in the country will.

  5. The article we read today was about how most commercials about losing weight are mainly females, but majority of the over weight people are males. It also asked why weight watchers waited so long to make a commercial focusing mainly on men. Lastly it talked about how the company is using the NBA play offs to show a lot of its commercials. I think they are doing that because they know a lot of males are going to be watching it, and they will see the commercial. That is what i think of it.
I think the marketing strategy for this is really smart. I think maybe it is a little ate, but it is smart. It does make sense, because majority of the viewers of the play offs are males. They will see this commercial and that will be in the back of there head for a while. That is what i think.

  6. This article is about weight watchers trying to reach out to men. There is a higher percentage of overweight men than women in the US. 55% of MLB players are overweight and 56% of NFL players are OBESE. Most of our role models/ heroes are overweight. Women get criticized way more harshly than men if they were overweight. Limbaugh is overweight and he was criticizing Michelle Obama for not looking like the girls on the Sports Illustrated magazines. I guess the public thinks that it is ok for men to be overweight but not for women.
This campaign is good because it is set right in the NBA playoffs. This is a good strategy because thousands of people will watch the NBA playoffs and some men might actually listen and take action. I like how it is trying to reach out to men because usually men won’t do something if they are not told to do it or they just might not be interested. This might work but I think that most men won’t even care to lose weight. Men are lazy and don’t like to work. Most men will be too busy to even think about losing weight with weight watchers because they will have a lot of stuff going on in their personal life.

  7. The article is about the fact that weight watchers wants to target males and has featured their commercials during the nba playoffs. The article stresses that obesity in men is not taken very seriously. Male political figures and actors are not criticized about their weight but women that are the same size are. Some sports figures are also not critisized for being fat. The company ultimatly wants to see a healthier world and so they are advertiseing for men now.
The stratagy does not make sense. I dont know why they would market now because obesity is scarce among basketball players and not as many people watch the NBA as they do other sports like football. I dont think it will work because men usually want to go workout instead of following a program. Because of this I think men will not really pay attention to it. I just think that they shouldnt have done this now.

  8. this article is talking about weight and specifically of mens weight.it sais that 70 percent of men are either overweight or obese and only 57 percent of women are either overweight or obese.but yet there are more females attending a gym or some place that helps you lose wight.why is thi?it also sais that most men already want to lose weight in their daily work out or in a website of excersices that some create.i see many websites where it shows a picture of before and after and before the person seems to be overwight and then he has like a six pack and they are in shape.

i think that advertising during an event like that is a great idea because many people are watching the playoffs and they get to see what they are advertising. this is like a commercial in the superbowl that iit is very important just because they want people to see their product and i think they are successful.i think that this article makes sense because even though these people are getting paid they care about the country because the less people obese or overwwight the better it is for the country so i think that this company is a very important factor not only for the people that use the product but for the country in general.

  9. The article basically talks about how weight watchers are one of the first companies to target men when it comes to losing weight. They are using the NBA playoffs to advertise their campaign. It is a big deal because in America more men are overweight than woman but woman are the center piece of advertising weight loss. Men usually lose weight on their own by physical activities and working out unlike woman who like to take diets. Using the NBA playoffs to advertise this should work because majority of men will be watching the playoffs.
Yes advertising during the NBA playoffs makes sense because a lot of men watch basketball. I like it because while watching a sport men can find a way to lose weight. The NBA playoff is one of the smartest things to for them to advertise, but the NFL Playoffs would be even better when that time comes around. Yes it will work because it worked well on women why it wouldn’t for men. Yes men will pay attention especially fat ones because they are most likely to lazy to change the channel so they will have to watch the advertisement

  10. This article is about weight watchers new ad campaign which targets men. It first asks the question "Why are they doing this now?" The article asks about why weight watchers never did this before, weight watchers says that it is because men tend to want to lose weight on there own. The article has a different argument. The article says that it is because of America's double standard. The article says that America bashes overweight women while promoting men who are overweight. The article shows this in three main ways, it looks at the promotion of overweight men in sports, the promotion of overweight comedians and the bashing of overweight female politician. I think that the sports issue is the most important. I think the author of the article didn't really consider what they were saying. Many athletes are overweight, but still in great shape. For example it is not uncommon for a defensive lineman in the NFL to weigh 300 pounds, but they can often run a 40-yard dash in 5 seconds or less.

I think weight watchers picked an excellent time to launch their new ad campaign. I remember seeing some commercials for it while I watched the NFL Draft. The NBA playoffs are also right now, and many men watch either the draft, the playoffs or both. This means that weight watchers new program will get a lot of exposure. Not only that, but the people who see the ads will also be the target market, men. For this reason I think that weight watchers new ad campaign will work.

  11. This article is about the programs and search of the difference between men and women when it comes to weight loss. Researches explain the situation away in trite “Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus” these meaning that we of course are different. When it comes to weight loss, one of the main points that count for men is that they would tent to start to loose weight on their own. They will exercise by themselves, go to gyms, and just create their own program. Women will then to lack in that manner. The thing is that almost 70 percent of men are overweight, as compared with 52 percent of women. This difference will be a main point for a real explanation on the gender disparity that is found in a chauvinist culture whose double standards demand physical perfection from women.

I think that most of the women need to get in a plan wanting to loose weight by their own and naturally. It is interesting how men even thought they practice more physical sports will tend to have a higher percent range of obesity than women. Harvard University, for instance, found that 55 percent of Major League Baseball players are obese. These players are interposed on TV between beer commercials featuring super-thin female models. So it make since because reflects a lot in their physical appearance. Overall I think they will end up paying attention because they will see it as a privilege even when it’s coming late.

  12. In weight watcher they see more women then men. Ninety percent of the people that are involved in weight watchers are women. Men just seem to want to loose weight on their own, in their own ways. Some guys don’t choose to loose weight because they they’re part of a comedy show or think that there’s nothing wrong with their size. For example, Chris Farley and Kevin James believe that their humor is most valuable because of their size. On the other hand, it’s not the same for women. You don’t see many women who are over weight on shows. Women seem to keep their bodies in shape and they don’t get accepted if they’re over weight and it the do get accepted they’re not taken seriously. Something that seemed interesting to me is how guys get hired or accepted to work on a show when women aren’t taken as serious when an over weight women goes to sign up. I don’t think that’s right because women should have the same rights as guys do no matter what their size is.

I don’t really get the point of the NBA advertisement. I also don’t get how they could help out over weight guys. I’m not to sure that it will work because not too many men are fans of the NBA. Most men are interested in football, soccer, hockey or golf. I’m not too into the advertisement they’re doing and dislike it because there are so many other ways that men can loose weight.

  13. This article talks about the new weight watchers advertisements in the NBA play offs. The reason why that is such a shack is weight watchers or other weight losing advertisement usually target woman. They give many reasons to why they think it is the way it is now. One of the reasons they gave is that when men deicide to lose weight they will do it on their own by going to the gym or some other way. Another big point they made is that there is a double standard with man and woman they named many examples in the entertainment and sport world of guys who are fat a still don’t get talked about on the news.
I think advertising during the nba playoffs is a great idea. The nba playoffs has a large views from men so it is a good target market. Also because of the many views at one time they can see if it worked so they can keep doing this or go at it from a different angle. I like this idea very well and I believe is will work.

  14. Typically men aren’t criticized based on their weight as much as females are. Females are judged if their appearance lacks that of a sports illustrated female model. Weight watchers as well as other weight loss programs are focused primarily on females because males tend to not want to go to counseling about their weight and they typically like to choose their own exercising schedules. An interesting contour is that, females are looked down on upon their weight, while men are achieving success because of it. Chris Farley and Kevin James for example are viewed as husky, well-liked comedians, while President Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle Obama, is being frowned upon because she lacks a size zero figure.

Marketing men as a target market is also brilliant because in this modern world we live in, why differentiate men from females? Men should be given the same opportunities for weight loss as much as females, and vice versa. Also in this modern world, saturated fats have been a major issue in our society. There is no excuse for men to be obese. Calling them “husky, lovable comedians” doesn’t make it okay for them to risk their lives by getting cholesterol, diabetes, and other major health issues. Men stereotypically tend to watch basketball more than females, so advertising during the NBA is a great strategy to gaining more customers for WEIGHT WATCHERS. In my personal opinion it will work, only based on the effective commercial and advertising strategies they use. If they approach it as a health factor, that might increase the potential of them gaining more followers.

  15. This article is about how males are overweight than women and shows examples from entertainment, politics, and sports. As they said in comedy if the male is overweight they are most likely liked because they are fat. Also in national football 56 percent of the players are obese and in baseball 55 percent players are overweight. Males in politics play the similar role while the females are skinny the men are fat. In the article the percentage of football players interested me because I thought all football players were big because of their muscle mass not fat.
The marketing strategy I think is very good, it’s telling about obesity right during the playoffs. It will keep the NBA players in shape too because it will be advertised to them. I like how they advertise about obesity because in America people need help for this problem and they need to realize about their diet and exercise. I think it will work because it is very supportive and convincing, I think men will pay attention because after seeing the advertisement they will feel insecure and get in on track.

  16. this article is about how weight watchers is trying to get more active male members and the ways they are trying to advertise. also how they have majority women and that a enormously large part of the population is overweight males. in a way weight watchers almost labeled themselves a female group by not advertising to males like they are trying to do now when its too late.

i think that their idea of advertising through the nba is a bold but worthwhile move. They need to continue with this idea and keep proposing the idea on shows that males are known to watch. I think they need to start to talk about how it is not unmanly to be on a diet and be healthy.

  17. This article discussed how more men are obese, compared to women, but how in weight commercials more females tend to be featured and directed to the female audience. Secondly, this article discussed how America has a huge double standard in how overweight men are taken more serious than females, from comedies to politics. And finally, it discussed how weight watchers would freshen things up and help people see a new perspective by addressing men in commercials during the NBA playoffs. I think the most interesting fact is that more men are obese compared to women, but still weight commercials are targeted at females, because people expect females to look good.

I think advertising during NBA playoffs makes sense because the guys watching it will be focused n the sport, and with that comes exercise. And also because mostly males watch the playoffs, so there commercials will be directly marketed at them. I like that Weight Watchers is helping put a new perspective on weight lose considering that men are overly obese than females. I think men will pay attention to it, because other weight advertisements don’t focus on men, their general target market is females.
