Restaurant chains prepare for new menu-labeling rules

A new federal law will soon make American diners far more aware of just what they are eating - but it might not change what they order. 

The law will force chain restaurants to disclose the amount of calories, fat and sodium in diners' favorite dishes. Many restaurants are already preparing for the changes, calculating calories in their meals, adjusting recipes and adding healthier choices.

At the same time, experts are divided over whether the new information will shock people into ordering protein-packed salmon instead of calorie- and fat-laden fettuccine Alfredo, or if it's just more meddling by the federal government that takes the pleasure out of eating.

  1. This article was about food chain restaurants and printing out nutrition facts for their items each restaurant cooks and sells. According to this article, there is a new law being advised and considered relating back to the United States obesity problem. Apparently, the government is still trying to lower obesity rates, and targeting big time food chain industries is just another way to say “look at what you’re eating”. This law will not only make restaurants provide their foods calories, but it will adjust recipes and help with healthier choices. I consider the whole calorie calculating idea one of the most significant points in this article because if you really think about it, when you go out to eat at your favorite restaurant, you really don’t know how many calories or grams of fat you’re eating. Yeah, you can eyeball it and estimate, but us calorie counters and health freaks of the world would actually like to know the exact amount we are eating, so I personally think this is a good idea.
    If I was an owner of a restaurant or restaurant chain and wanted to let people know about these changes, I would put the nutrition information somewhere were people would be able to see it and read it clearly. I think the best place to put it is on the menu next to the item, telling everything the buyer needs to know about the food they’re about to consume. Panera does something like this with their overlook menus. The calories are right next to the food item, unlike McDonald’s where their nutrition information is on the back of the paper mat you get on your eat-in tray.
    This is what I would do to market my food’s nutrition if I was an owner of a restaurant.

  3. My thought on restaurant chains prepare for new menu-labeling rules. Are that I think that it is a good idea that they are writing down how much calories are in the food. Let’s face it people in America are very over weight. By put the number of calories on the menu it will help that person make better decision to eat better. I think by add the calories count the restaurants are helping Americans slim down.

    The two marketing activities that I would do to tell people about the changes in the restaurant would be… One get some air time on the TV because everybody watches TV and I know people will see the new changes if we air on there. The second one would be take out an ad in the newspaper in the restaurant section to tell people about the calories. Last but not least I would send out mail to the zip code where the restaurant is located at.

  4. The first paragraph is telling the people of U.S.A that there is gonna be change. The change will be upon your decision. food industre is being pressed by the government.they will make food companies let the costumers know what they are eating.

    If i was an restaurant owner i would put menus on the table with the ingredents of the meals they are about to eat. BY doing that they are
    alerted to what they consume. add more vegtables
    in my meals. To make the costumers happy i will let the pic how they would like there meals cooked. know thats a successful business

  5. In this article it states that restaurants are going to change how many calories foods they serve have. Many restaurants are already preparing. The government thinks it’s a good decision to change the way people eat. There are a lot of obese people in America, one in four in Arizona are obese. Starting next year restaurants will need to cut their calories and they will need to print out calorie count on menus. Restaurants will need a lot of money to be able to get the new foods dietitians analyzed.

    I would have someone outside passing out fliers to tell them about the change in the food. That way they would be well informed before they ordered their food. I would consider getting a poster or a banner that said new and low on calories or something. People would be informed before they came into my restaurant. That is the two activities I would do for my restaurant.

  6. This article is mainly about how resturants are going to have to cut back on the fat filled foods. They are going to have to start making healthier dishes with less calories. And diners favorite dishes will also have to be less calories. If i was the resturant owner, i would be some what mad, because it wont have as much taste now. And worrying about calories should be the customers choice. maybe some of them are trying to eat more calories or gian some weight. So now i would start marketing towards those who are trying to eat less calories. I would say better taste with less calories. Or something like that for a slogan.

  7. The article is about a new federal law that will soon make American diners aware about what they are eating but not about what they are ordering. This means diners are worrying more about what people order then what they eat. This law will force chain restaurants to acknowledge the amount of calories, fat and sodium in the most ordered dishes, which means that restaurants are going to be more focused on the nutrition in each plate. Another point is that experts are wondering about the response of the people about the new menu-labeling law. This means that if people start to see a change in the dishes then they maybe they are thinking that people are taking the goodness out of the dish.

    One marketing activity I would do if I was an owner of a restaurant is that I would put the nutrition information about each dish next to that dish. This would help people make the right choice of food. Another marketing activity is that I would have the nutrition facts on the menu itself so everybody can ready what is in each dish. I think that this is a great way to help people find what they are looking for. This is what I would do if I was the owner of restaurant.

  8. As I read this article, I come across many important points. Government is forcing stores to disclose their calorie amount. This is because the United States is getting too obese. However, some stores already have these calorie charts in place, but they still choose not to eat healthy. Also, foods like salads can be deceiving because there can be a lot of unknown fat. Furthermore, having the calories written somewhere in the store makes customers more willing to try new foods.
    If I was the owner of at restaurant, I would always be promoting my store through some sort of advertisement. This way I can let my customers know the change that is happening as well as promoting my product. Also the menu is a big thing in restraints. On the menu I will be telling people about the new change, and they can know exactly what they will be eating. My changes will make my customers feel assured they will be not be consuming any unknown fats.

This article is telling us how the government is trying to make us be more conscience about what we eat because of the growing population of people becoming more overweight, so they are making restaurants label how many calories and fats their food has so that when people go and buy food they know what their intake of calories and fats are so that they might be more willing to buy healthier food for the long run. Restaurants are also coming up with new foods that are healthier foods so that they can serve healthy foods as well. People will have the opportunity to tell whether this change is helping them or not.
    What I would do let know people about the changes that are going on would I would go around advertising the change and how the change would affect us and in the long run what it would do for my customers . I would also promote the new change and tell people how we are coming up with foods that are healthier for my customers. I would also put the calories and fats of the food they are eating on the trays on which people will be eating so that they can know what they are eating.

  10. The five main points of this article are reduce obesity, customer impact, restaurant impact, healthy eating tips, do's and donts. Reduce obesity because, the nation's obesity rates to eating out and overweight leads to chronic diseases and high health-care costs. The customers said that many of them go out for dinner and out to eat. The restaurnt gets money because most America's like to go out to eat, either lunch or dinner, that's my opionion. The restaurnts are planning to reduce the calories on the food and putting a calorie list on the menu. People have to get tips one way or another because the new law won't be fully implemented till 2012, that is why there is some tips for people on the article to look at and try to do what it says so people's obsesity does not grow anymore. The most imprtant point is the tips because people need them so that they make a healthy and wise choice when they order food so that they don't get anymore obese than what they already are. People should watch what they eat so less people die from diseases and sicknesses of obesity.

    If I was the owner of a restaurant i would make everyone know the change by putting in the menu as well, promoting on the window of the restaurant. I would higher the price on the high fat food and lower the price on the healthy food, if people really want to eat unhealthy like they do now, i would get money because they're willing to pay so much for food that will make you gain weight. I would also take out food with high calories on the menu and put more delicious salads so that people can crave them and eat. I would make the salads in a way so that they don't have fating in them for example, a lot of things that they use nowa days to make a salad.

The people who eat the food will determine if the food Is a big help or if it not.

    What I would do for people can see my changes is that I will promote it on T.V. for it can catch many people attention. Another way I will do is do like a doing newspaper ads and put posters everywhere. And like every time a costumer comes in I will tell them the menu and what is the best choice to choose to help pick healthier foods. This all my plans if I was the owner of the restaurant.

In this article it discussing about how restaurants are going to tell their customers how much calories they are consuming .and lots of the restaurants preparing a menu on the food they order it well show how much calories is in the food customer can be aware of how they choose they favorite meal .The government is making the best decision ever because it changing the way people eat and it help prevent obesity and having an heart attack.



    I would go on most popular radio station the Kane show and talk about how restaurants are going to tell customer how much calories in there meal. And see what people opinions are about the government changing the way restaurant cook there food and make more healthy for there customers to eat
