SEM Blog Assignment # 5 (25 points)

Third U.S. lacrosse league in the works

By Terry Lefton, Sports Business Journal

Despite the fact that the two biggest pro lacrosse leagues aren’t models of profitability, another pro lacrosse circuit is being formed in the U.S.

The North American Lacrosse League hopes to begin its indoor season in January, with six to eight teams playing a 12-game schedule that would compete with the National Lacrosse League, the older and established league that traces its roots to the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League in 1986.

Former NBA D-League President Phil Evans will serve as North American Lacrosse League commissioner and be based in Somerville, N.J.

“The opportunity we see is for American players, particularly those well-established from their collegiate years,” said Evans, adding that the league’s schedule will enable players from the outdoor Major League Lacrosse to play in the North American Lacrosse League. “There’s a big enough player pool and I don’t see us competing with [the NLL] any more than we are competing with any entertainment option.”

In a 2 paragraph response (a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph), answer the following questions. In paragraph # 1, summarize the article in 3 main points.  Which one of the main points do you feel is the most interesting and why?  Be specific with your thoughts.

The league hopes to differentiate itself from the NLL by offering a considerably lower cost of entry, and Evans said the North American Lacrosse League will be far less tolerant of fighting than the NLL, which permits fisticuffs to the degree the NHL does. “We don’t see fighting as an element that adds anything to the game,” Evans said. “If anything, it detracts, and that will be a factor in attracting American players.”  In paragraph # 2, address the 2 points made above.  How do you feel about this marketing strategy and change in product from the NLL?  In the end, do you feel the NALL will end up competing directly with the already established NLL?  Why or why not?  Be specific with your thoughts.

  1. This article is about a lacrosse organization that is trying to start their own brand and team and they are planning to one day compete with big teams. This organization is specifically looking for young American lacrosse players it also sais that in the national lacrosse league 22 percent of player are American and they are trying to get that number to be higher. North American Lacrosse League franchises will cost about $250,000 and players will earn from $200 to $1,000 a week. The Boston NLL franchise that began play in 2009 cost $3 million. NLL players average about $18,000 a season.

I think that it’s a great idea what these people are doing because they are planning to lower the cost of entry so it would make it easier for anybody to get into the league because the costs will be lower than the NLL. It also sais that this organization is not going to tolerate fighting like the NLL does because it causes a big issue to the game.we don’t see fighting as a good element said Evan so basically this organization is trying to be different than the NLL.

This article explains the North American Lacrosse League that hopes to begin its indoor season in January, with six to eight teams playing a 12-game schedule that would compete with the National Lacrosse League. It will eventually affect the team since not many people are Americans. The majority of them are projected to be Americans, and they are calling the new league a developmental league. I think that the most important point of them is to get organize with what the team wants and see if they can take advantage of the opportunity given. If there has been an earlier attempt at an official tie as the NLL and has been rejected, then that should mean something.
I feel like it’s a good point to differentiate itself from the NLL by offering a considerably lower cost of entry, but this permits fisticuffs to the degree the NHL also does. “If anything, it detracts, and that will be a factor in attracting American players.” I mean, at the end it’s going to be their decision, and they should see if it will be good for them or not, including Evans. I think that the NALL will end up competing directly with the already established NLL. It is most probable because they’re not completely deciding on what they’re going to do now and they don’t seem to have a solid conclusion on what the team will be focusing on and I think that competition can be involved in that sense.

  3. This article explains the development of the North America Lacrosse League. It will be played indoor across the country with around eight teams. The teams will play about 12 games a season. Unlike the NLL, the already established lacrosse league the NALL will be mostly american players. The NALL is hoping to be a competitor with the NLL and not a developmental league.

It is a great idea for the NALL to have lower costs than the NLL because its newer and it needs to gain a fan base. With them doing this, it guaranties some people with go to the games.
The NALL has also said it will be less tolerant of fighting than the NLL. They do not believe it adds anything to the game. This is not the the greatest decision because some people come to see the roughness and fights alone, but it may attract more family's.

  4. One of the major points in this article is that the NALL is looking to start a new league. The second point is that they are not trying to compete with the other established leagues. And thirdly, that it is the third lacrosse team in the works. I think that the most interesting is that they are trying to start a new league of which they hope to begin in January. They hope to have a minimum of six teams playing a 12 game schedule.

I think the marketing strategy is smart because they’re lowering the cost of entry. I also think that them being less tolerant of fighting is a good thing. I do believe that the NLL and the NALL will end up directly competing. Because they both focus on Lacrosse and the NALL is lowering the price of entry and saying they are less tolerant of fighting compared to the NLL.
