Sports & Entertainment Marketing Blog Assignment # 1 (25 points)

For our first blog assignment, in a two paragraph response (a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph), give me your thoughts on the following topics.

In paragraph # 1, think about what we have discussed so far in class.  The marketing terms and discussions have been flying around the room at a fast pace! Tell me about something interesting (sports & entertainment related) that you have learned in the first few classes.  Why is it interesting to you?  Be specific with your thoughts.

In paragraph # 2, discuss another sports & entertainment industry related topic you hope we discuss in the near future?  Why is it interesting to you?  Be specific with your thoughts.  Remember, a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph.

Please sign your name to the bottom of the blog entry.

  1. I haven't been enrolled in sports marketing for very long, but I have already learned quite a lot. I now know that sports and entertainment are intertwined. Both can be seen as a type of amusement. Sports entertain both the athletes and the fans. The major difference between the two is that a sport does not have a plan and the outcome is unknown.

So far the majority of our discussion has been related to the Super Bowl. And why not? It is only like the biggest annual sports event. Now that the Super Bowl is sort of winding down I'm not entirely sure what we are going to talk about. Something that I am interested in is the illegal downloading of music for free. I know it is a growing issue, and apparently it really impacts record companies and artists. But how much are they really effected?

  2. In this class I've learned many things. For example, I've learned that many athletes are able to choose their designs. I always thought that the athletes had to put on the clothes or shoes that their sponser picked out for them. I also learned about how much people pay just to get a commercial on the television. They pay millions of dollars just to get a thirty second commercial on air. If they pay millions just to get a commercial on the t.v, imagine how much they pay to get a movie made and casted in the theaters or televison. This class gets interested when it comes to talking about movies because your abel to get more details about the movie or show.
Later on in this class I would like to discuss about the next World Cup. I love soccer and I'm always interested in learning more about it. I've been playing soccer since i was five years old. My favorite teams are Real Madrid and Brazil. Another topic I would like to discuss about is the up coming movies for this summer because during summer vacation I go to the movie theater a lot. I love watching scary movies, action movies and comedy movies.

We have learned a lot in the last week about marketing. I never knew that companies change so many things in such little time to get people to buy their products. I always thought commercials and ads were made for everyone, but since I learned about demographics I now know that most are aimed at a certain age group, race, sex, etc. I also think that it is interesting that athletes or famous people are actually there in the room helping design and talking about the products that the company sells. I also didn’t know that it’s a million dollars for a thirty second commercial that will be aired when the super bowl is on.
I want to learn about how athletes sign to sport companies. Like how Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are signed to Nike and are on their commercials. I want to know how they contact them, how much they get paid, what they are expected to do, and if the team they play for has anything to do with it. I would like to learn about this because it seems interesting and you never really here about it much into detail on ESPN or sport websites. I also want to know if they are the ones who actually design the shoes and clothing for the company or they just put their name on it.

  4. 1. In class we basically learned about how companies make products based on the demographics. So companies would make things that mostly appeal to us teenagers. Something interesting that I recently learned, would be about facebook’s new messaging system. It’s not on facebook yet but they are planning to have this system where everyone gets an @facebook.com email address. You get a ‘social inbox’ from your friends and their friends so your messages are regulated depending on your privacy settings. I found this interesting because facebook has been changing a lot, from the new privacy settings to the new profile changes( which in my opinion, i liked the old version of facebook than the new one). I think a lot more people would start using facebook more often because…hello?... you get a facebook email address, and since most people use facebook instead of their email anyway, the number of people on facebook would increase immensely.

    2. I hope we discuss what happens when a TV show isn’t appealing to the audience or why shows suddenly stop coming on TV and all we see is repeats. I have always wondered why my favorite shows stopped airing on TV. Is it because they have a certain number of episodes that they have to do over time? I remember that Lizzie McGuire had ended because the number of episodes they did had reached the limit, but how come American Idol is still airing after releasing a lot of episodes? Wasn't Lizzie Mcguire a popular show too on disney channel? Also, what happens when a TV show isn’t really interesting to the audience? Does the TV broadcast just have it taken off automatically or the company votes on having it taken off? What happens to the actors? Do they paid after the show stops airing for acting for however long they acted in the series or they just don’t get paid?

  5. Paragraph #1
In sports and entertainment marketing we have learned a lot of theings so far. Like how sports and entertainment (music and acting) has combined together to make more money. We have also learned that the entire marketing industry is striving for money, that's it. Money is what they all want, no matter what. That's a few things i have learned in this class.

    Paragraph #2
We have done a lot in this class so far. Although one thing i still want to learn about is why and how NBA stars leave the team they were drafted to. Like why will Carmelo Anthony wants to leave Denver and maybe go to the Lakers. I also think people want him to go because it will bring even more publicity to the Lakers. I think the NBA commisioner wawnts another big story like when Lebron went to the Miami Heat. That's all i really want to know more about.

  6. I learned that there are many forms of entertainment. Movies, music, books and even sports are all forms of entertainment. Marketing is the process of developing, promoting, distributing and selling. I learned about this new group called la jolla group and they make sportswear. They combine sports, apparal, and fashion.

I want to learn about people buying bootleg dvds and watching movies for free online. Is it illegal? Who gets payed? What are the consequences of selling bootleg dvds? This seems interesting to me because i wonder what the consequenses would be.

  7. in sports and entertainment marketing so far i have learned about many things. a few things i have learned about are target markets, advertising, the difference between sports and entertainment and much more. in the beginning of class we learned about the super bowl and how much money the super bowl brings in. we also learned that the super bowl is held in domes or warm climate areas in order for more fans to come and for the fans to be happy and spend money. another big thing i learned about is advertising. i learned that during the super bowl, companies pay three million dollars for 30 seconds of air time. a lot of big companies look to have commercials during the Superbowl because most people in the US and world wide are watching the Superbowl. we also learned about target markets and how different companies have different target markets. for instance different age groups, gender, race, income, and more.
    Paragraph #2
a topic that i want to learn about later on in this class is why there might not be an NFL season next year. i want to learn about what is going on with the owners, and players. i also want to know why the players are going on strike. this is an interesting topic for me because i like to watch football during the regular season and the playoffs. i really want to learn about what is going on with this situation in the NFL because i enjoy watching football and i am also wondering how it will affect the other fans.

  8. In class we learned about superbowl commercials and how important it is to the companies investing in them. Companies spend about 3 million dollars per 30 second commercial and up to 6 million for a 60 second commercial. Companies invest so much money because they know that people are watching the superbowl and thats how they get their product out there. The bigger companies usually have more than one commercial and so they sometimes spend more then 20 million on commercials alone. There are also companies that have celebrities show up in there commercials so that the average person will see that they are using it and want it for themselves.

A topic that is in the news alot is the collective bargaining agreement in both the NFL and the NBA. The NFL is more in the news because their bargaining agreement ended this season. If another agreement is not settled there is a big chance that there will be a lockout. That will result in there not being any more games until a new agreement is settled too. That would be devestating to both the people who watch it as well as the people who play it.

  9. If they pay millions just to get a commercial on the t.v.

The related topics that I hope we discuss in the near future is basketball and training. This is interesting to me because I like to play basketball and workout sometimes. Basketball is a fun and intertaining sport because you have to shoot the ball in the hoop and hope it goes in.

  10. We learned about the marketing that comes with sports. Such as the clothing lines that feature athletes clothing like Metal Mulicia clothing that Brian Degan made. Also jersey of sports teams and player produce alot of money because people want to wear their favorite players jersey. All in all sports marketing companies are very successful in the past couple years.

What I want to learn about in this class is the entertainment side of marketing other than sports. Such as movie, television shows or even video games. I just want to know how it is people market things movie or television related and compare that to the ideas and tecniques that sports marketers have. How does Sports Marketing differ from Entertainment Marketing and how are they the same? That is what i want to learn.

  11. In class we discussed the target market. The target market is the group of people that you are trying to appeal to. If your trying to sell a product you should always be aware of who is your target market, becuase you want to put most of you money into making them feel better about your product than someone who wouldent care in the first place.

Hopefully in the future we will talk about The Final Four. How did March Madness and the Final Four become so popular? What team won first and has won the most? We may be able to discuss who will win this year and what players will make a difference. And finally will this year be as good as last year?

  12. We have discussed about how sports is a different type of entertainment. As for the music and movies industry they have it all planned out unlike sports where you wont know who will win because its not planned. companies also use athethes in thier advertisements for there prducts. They use athlethes because there are bunch of famous athletehes which fans love and if they see them in a ad they will surely buy the product they are promoting. Athelethes also make there own clothing lines to sell.

What i want to learn is how rookies get drafted to professinal teams and what is the process. I learn that beacuase i want to know how professional sports determine how good a player is to get drafted in thier team. And how players have to go thorugh in the process and if they move to that state they been drafted to. I also i want to know there contract is what is written in it.

  13. In sport and enter. I have learned a lot about advertisement. The things we discussed about target market. Target market is the people who will buy the products. If the company is trying to sell toys they will advertise during a kid show or in a kid watched channel. I also read that companies research what part of a show is more watched. For example if it’s a realty show people are more likely to watch the end of the show where they would announce the results. They target the time and the show based on the demographic they are advertising to, also the advertisement cost rises based on the popularity of the show.
I would like to learn some thing about movie, show and song rights. I know shows have to pay artist when they play there song on tv. I also know when a logo is shown on tv they have to pay. I want to know how they determine the cost. I also want to learn if they alert the artist or the companies before or after. Another thing I want to know is royalty checks.

  14. Many intellectual thoughts arise from Sports and Entertainment Marketing class. These thoughts have illustrated our process of interpreting what this marketing class really is about. When marketing first comes to mind, thoughts arise from a Marxist point of view. Although marketing relies on the process of making certain money, marketing can’t be perceived only through a Marxist lens, but rather a structural. Illuminating the importance of marketing, it’s quite mainly about promotion, and enhancing the interest of certain demographics. Although many seem to differentiate between sports and entertainment marketing, we have learned that these two different types of marketing have one motivation in mind, and that they are rather similar in thought. This motivation is simply that they are both entertaining to not only this generation but past and present generation as well.
Many subjects related to sports and entertainment industries are interesting to the general population. In certain television shows and movies, many sports teams are represented throughout the film. Do these sports teams have to include some money in the process to which these sports teams are incorporated? It’s rather an interesting topic because in general films and shows you would see the characters rocking a favorite sports team jersey. Does it also hinder who watches the shows? Like for example if a Cowboys fan watches a film and the protagonist is wearing a Redskins jersey, are they likely to continue watching that show?

I've only been here for a day. So far, what was presented to me yesterday were some commercials. They were about movies, tv shows, cars, coca-cola, and some others. These were showing the importance having to deal with perusing people to believe in something so they can make actions about it. So, this was interesting to know and learn the importance of having to make them.

One topic that I would like to learn more about will be movies. I’m interesting to know more details. I would like to know how hard is to make them, the films, and the actors. I would also like to know how much money will be needed and how they are able to afford all the cost throughout the movie. Seems like a hard job.

  16. Sports these days are becoming a big part of the entertainment industry. For example, now a day the entertainment industry is paying big time athlete’s huge amounts of money just to sponsor their product on television. It insane, but it is business. This provides this industry with a lot of money.

I would hope to 1 day talk about the things that the popular franchise company, Nike is doing. Nike now has 18 franchise companies that are in its own name. In the pass they have sponsored big time athletes and furthermore brought in a lot of money for the company.

  17. What I have learned in sports entertainment marketing is how business use commercials to make people know w hats happening and what they are doing and I’ve also learned that it cost a lot of money to make a 30 second commercial I have also learned that its another way of making money and its sorta like a type of news that has specials and sells stuff and tell people what they have

The othere sports I hope we talk about is wwe world wrestleing entetainmen t the reason I chose that is because its both a sport and entertainment…it entertains people because are putting their body on the line just to make the fans enjoy a good show and they produce stuff and sell stuff and it’s a sport because the pros sweat and risk their body to do what they love the most

  18. What i've learned in Sports & entertainment marketing is the 5 P's. The 5 P's are product, price, people, place, and promotion. If the product gets properly promoted it will interest the consumers. And the price will play a role, because if the consumers can find it for a cheaper price, or think that the price is too hight they wont buy it. The place u pick to sell or promote the product is also important. Like when they sell shirts of your team at a game you're attending.

I'd like to learn more about what haoppens when a show is just beginning, and what the producers have to go throught not only to promote it, but also to make it air. The whole process of what happens after it airs, and how they continue to promote it. And if it doesn't work what happens after it gets cut off.
