Manuel Neuer

Premier League could host goal-line test

From ESPN (Associated Press)

LONDON -- Goal-line technology could be coming to the Premier League next season, with Hawk-Eye hoping to test its system during top-level matches for the first time.

But with soccer's rules-making body yet to allow referees to consult high-tech aids, the trials and results will remain secret.

Hawk-Eye founder Paul Hawkins also is concerned that if his system contradicted a ruling on a disputed goal and the results were made public, the referee would be undermined.

The sport moved closer to adopting goal-line technology earlier this month after the International Football Association Board approved another year of testing and FIFA president Sepp Blatter declared that it "helps referees."

Motorola Atrix Smartphone-Powered Laptop

From Time, Techland

Technology experts have been saying for years—YEARS!—that our personal computers will one day be so small and powerful that we'll carry them around in our pockets. Motorola's Atrix 4G smartphone and laptop dock have gotten an early jump on that future.

The Android-based Atrix 4G phone is powerful in its own right—dual core processor, an entire gigabyte of RAM, 4-inch 960x540 screen—and that power is used to drive an entire laptop-sized interface with the addition of Motorola's $500 Lapdock ($300 if you buy it when you buy the phone).

It's a cool, albeit very, very expensive glimpse into a future where your smartphone is your main computer that you pop into various docking stations at home, in the car, and at the office.

Sony Unveils the NGP, the Next Evolution of Portable PlayStation Hardware

From Time, Techland

As widely expected, Sony debuted their next mobile gaming device earlier today in Japan. Rumors have run hot and heavy over the last few months about what the so-called and elements of the PlayStation Meeting presentation have borne out some of the speculation.

Codenamed NGP for Next Generation Portable, the handheld sports two analog joysticks, a purported first for such a gaming system. It also boasts a five-inch OLED touchscreen and a corresponding touch panel on the rear of the unit. The NGP's looks harken back to the first Playstation models, while The 3G connectivity that was first reported last year gets paired up with WiFi to create an ideally seamless online experience. Games (and presumably other content) will live on a new Flash cartridge format, which will co-exist in conjunction with digital distribution methods. The NGP's elongated oval look harkens back to the industrial design of the earliest PSP model, leaving the flat, compact aesthetics of the PSPGo to languish.

An Anatomy of a White House Marketing Flop

From the National Journal

President Obama is holding a nationwide contest for high schools to show how they're preparing kids for college. He's the prize. And no one is applying. But it's not for a lack of trying.

So few schools entered to win a commencement speech from Obama, CBS News' Peter Maer reported, that the entry deadline for the White House's Commencement Challenge was extended from February 25 to March 11. A panicked memo from White House staffer on February 22 warned there was "a major issue" with the challenge--only 14 schools had applied. More than a thousand schools applied to win the a commencement address from the president last year. By February 28, the number of entries was only up to 68. Another memo went out saying, "Something isn't working."

Video-Equipped Shopping Carts: The New Way to Keep Kids Quiet While Grocery Shopping

From Time.com

Food shopping with kids is a challenge: Not only are they prone to complain of boredom and sometimes walk away when you're not looking, little ones are also apt to beg for sugary expensive treats strategically placed on shelves right at their eye level. The standard advice for parents hoping to supermarket shop in peace—and with the time to evaluate deals and prices—has been to simply leave the kids at home, if possible. But what if there was a way to keep children happily occupied and draw their attention away from snacks featuring cartoon characters at the same time?

The King Soopers grocery store chain will soon be doing just that, and interestingly enough, the solution involves cartoon characters.

The Denver Post reports that 29 metro-area King Soopers locations will offer at least three video-equipped shopping carts by the end of the month. Many supermarkets have shopping carts with plastic little cars kids can sit in, but these carts will be different: Inside each is a video player, not unlike the DVD players families have become accustomed to in SUVs.

In a 2 paragraph response (a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph), answer the following questions.  In paragraph # 1, provide your thoughts on this interesting idea.  Do you like it or dislike it?  Why or why not?  Do you think it will prove to be something that will attract potential customers to King Soopers locations?  Why or why not?  Be specific with your thoughts.

In the last paragraph of the article, the writer asks, "Are the kids' programs interrupted with commercials for toys, snacks, and other products you'd rather not buy? If so, that could negate any bonus brought about by the carts: The decrease in nagging for junk food appearing on supermarket shelves might be matched by an increase in nagging for goodies appearing on video screens".  In paragraph # 2, provide your response to the posed questions.  What do you think?  Be specific with your thoughts.

The NBA’s Most ValuableTeams

From Forbes.com

The average NBA team is now worth $369 million, 1% more than last year. But several of the league’s 30 teams have not fully recovered from the recession, and as a result values are still 2.6% below the $379 million peak average they hit two years ago.

No player in the 64-year history of the National Basketball Association has come close to having the immediate and profound impact that LeBron James had when he bolted the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat this summer. The King’s move accounted for both the biggest gain and drop in team values: the Heat’s worth increased 17%, to $425 million (seventh among the NBA’s 30 teams), and the Cavaliers plummeted 26%, to $355 million (15th).

spinners.jpgPromotions: Canonical, Comical, and Climatological

2011 promotional schedules are being released at a rapid clip these days, with highlights aplenty.

But few things in this world are as exciting as unprecedented onfield aerial acrobatics, making THIS Lowell Spinners promo an (exceedingly) early "Promo of the Year" frontrunner.

A "Human Home Run" is exactly what you would think it is. Say the Spinners:

The human cannonball, David Smith, Jr., will be shot from a cannon at home plate over the outfield wall following the conclusion of the Spinners game.

"When it comes to human cannonballs, David Smith is the best of the best," said Spinners Vice President Jon Goode. "This is an idea we discussed years ago and he saved it for the Lowell Spinners. Five years in the making, this is going to be a night you will not want to miss."
