Global Marketing Blog Assignment # 5 (25 points)

Why Marketers Should Care About a Mexican Kid Falling Into a Stream

Gamesa Cookie Spot Shows Power of Social Media -- and Online Hispanic Community

From Adage.com

Joe Kutchera, the author of "Latino Link: Building Brands Online With Hispanic Communities and Content," is convinced that targeting Hispanics online is no longer possible without building -- and maintaining -- a continuous relationship with consumers on social networks. Perhaps that is why Kutchera, a former Time Warner executive, loves to tell the story of Gamesa, a PepsiCo-owned company that turned a viral sensation into its own advertising pitch in Mexico.

For the uninitiated, "La caĆda de Edgar" ("Edgar's Fall") is a home video featuring a Mexican kid named Edgar and his cousin Fernando hiking on a ranch near their home town of Monterrey. The video, originally uploaded in 2006, became so popular that it continues to attract viewers (over 21 million viewings as of Nov. 30) and gave rise to a local phenomenon that included ringtones, games, parodies, remixes and even a web page where Edgar was proposed for Mexico's presidency.

In a 2 paragraph response (a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph), answer the following questions.  In paragraph # 1, now that you have watched the videos, provide your thoughts and opinions of the 2nd video.  What did you like and dislike about it?  Why? From an branding perspective, in your opinion, what was the most important part of the video?  Be specific with your thoughts.  The Gamesa video, says Kutchera, speaks volumes of the power of social media and how a good, engaging story can be told regardless of the media.  In paragraph # 2, discuss your feelings about social media (viral videos, blogs, etc.) and the role it can play in brand building.  Be specific with your thoughts.

  1. I liked how this company provided humor into their commercial. By doing this, they have reached out to a larger target market because children will want to buy their product now too. The most important part of the video, in regards to branding, is the last scene where the child is eating the candy bar. This scene alone illustrates that if someone eats this candy bar then they will have power.

I enjoy watching social media. I believe that when a video is really entertaining, it should be viewed by a lot of people to provide humor. Companies are smart in using social media in order to advertise their products. The fact that social media is able to spread so fast among a large group of people creates an open door for companies to advertise their products among a large group of people. If people see a viral video/blog/etc. that they enjoy and it is branded with a product, they will know that product and could be curious to see how it is.

  2. The 2nd video for the advertisement was still kept original to the first even though there were changes made to it. The video did appeal to the Hispanic community. It was a funny video which would make people laugh. I liked how it was well to the point and very interesting by changing it from the original. The most important part of the video was the ending because it got straight to the point.

Social media as in viral videos, blogs, social networking, etc. play a crucial role in today's society. The role it plays is that it's able to branch out and reach audiences all over the world. The sties that are used to distribute things with brands are so immense that everyone shares it and passes it to each other. For brand building its great because it creates a wider outreach for the company to be in touch with other people due to the social media.

  3. I've seen this video on youtube before and it kept me entertain the whole time i was watching it.
I wasn't aware that a company used it -remixed it to turn it to a commercial for their company though , the second video , i've never seen before , but it was a good idea to flip the script and turn the log on the other kid and not Edgar and at the end , his just eating the companies product who was using it to advertise it.

Social media , has become so popular now a days , that companies are using it to reachout to new consumers. Websites like youtube , google videos and even facebook videos , are being watch everywhere and companies believe that , that is the best way to gain costumers and advertise their products online or anywhere.

  4. The second video was really funnier than the first one in my opinion. The kid in the yellow shirt throws the other kid in the red shirt over board. In the second video revenge was sweet, because the knights throw the kid in the water, even the camera man went in this time. At the end the boy eating the chocolate bar was really funny. The most important part of the video was when he was eating the candy bar, because it show case the candy, and promote it as well.

Social media is very important in brand building, because every one uses the media, or sees the media at some point in time. With facebook and other social networks, brands and companies and easy get their products advertise and get it across to consumers. The blogs get the companies to see what people think about their products, and this enables them to make adjustments and to see where they can improve on.

  5. This video is a very popular video the thing that I liked is that it looks like they are using the same piece of log that they used in the original video. The most important part to me is when the guy calls the guards, and they throw the kid and the kid with the camera, then the kid pulls out a chocolate bar and eats it.

This is a good way for the company to advertize their product because this video is very popular and it has been viewed over 21 millions all over the world and so far this new video has been viewed about 6.5 millions. This video is mostly toward Hispanic population since is one of the fast growing population and over 62.9% of Hispanic people are online.

  6. I really didn’t like the commercials at all. The first commercial was okay since it was the original. But I didn’t like remake that much. I thought that the second commercial was overdoing it. The commercial did open up the marketing to kids since it was a kid orientated commercial. The only thing I was confused with was it had a small amount of branding. And I didn’t see anything that was related to the product to much.

Social media is a great way to promote things. Its also very entertaining to other people like kids. For brand building its great because it creates a wider outreach for the company to be in touch with other people due to the social media. The fact that social media is able to spread so fast among a large group of people creates an open door for companies to advertise their products among a large group of people. I think they help the world go around. Social Media also helps get things out and help with promotion.

  7. I feel that this first video is some what funny. If I knew what they were saying it might be funnier. I didnt like that 2nd video is seemed pointless to me. It may appeal to others but for me not so much. I dont think the commpany make money on this video. They could have used something shorter or cut some of the video out to make it shorter.

I feel that the company lost money by making this. The could have dne a much better job on it. It would have been better short, short and sweet. It may have been funnny to others that could understand what was being said in the video but i cant speak spanish so i dont know what was going on. It was funny when the kid fell but all the things before and after seemed pointless to me.

  8. I think the second video was good. It was a comeback for the little boy who fell in the 1st video. I don’t believe the video that persuasive towards buying the candy. I didn’t like the fact that the boy kept messing with the other boy when he told him to stop. When people keep playing around bad things always happen.
I believe social media is great. Having viral videos can attract viewers which will attract them to the product. Blogs help the customers and developers converse about the product. The customer can say what they like and dislike. Then the developer can come up with ways to make the product better.
