VSU students compete in NASCAR competition
BY JACOB VAUGHANNASCAR Sprint Cup races at Talladega Superspeedway are characterized by the large-scale wrecks that seem to occur at every outing. Commonly referred to as the "Big One," the pileups often change the complexion of the race by producing a new pack leader.
That is exactly what four enterprising students from Virginia State University are banking on.
Curtis Walker, Briana Williams, Nichelle Broner and Vincent Pierson are the first VSU participants of NASCAR Kinetics: Marketing in Motion - a competitive program that affords college students the opportunity to gain real-world sports marketing experience.

This is important because it helps understand the one side of the sports media which is NASCAR. By the students participating in this event they probably had a better statement about how the sports industry works. It also gives them the opportunity to see the real action up close and how the tension is build up when things go wrong.
ReplyDeleteWhat the Edison marketing can do could be like trying to get maybe a NFL team to come to the school or maybe the coaches and see what they go through during the season. I think that would be a good idea because we can get a NFL team to actually come to our school and also get the experience. by the NFL team coming to our school we could also learn what the coaches have to go through during the season.
Competing in a NASCAR competition is a great way of breaking into the sports business world because if you find it fun and enjoyable, then maybe this is what you want to do with your life. This competition would help people recognize the joy of sports and how people love it. Being involved with this is very fun because you are active and having a lot of fun with this job. If this does make people want to work for the sports industry, there is also another up side to this competition. Some people may just become a lot more interested in NASCAR, and buy tickets to go see the games. This is also a great thing that could happen just from holding this little competition.
ReplyDeleteEdison could partner up with Top Golf so that they could both have positive experiences. If everything works out properly, then both Edison and Top Golf will be happy with the results. My first idea would be to have Top Golf come let around 10-15 Edison kids come hit golf balls for free. That way, Edison is happy, and if the students like playing golf, then they will just come back and buy the stuff they need the next time. Also, they could do a special deal, such as each student from Edison gets a free basket of golf balls after purchasing 2 or 3. This way the company will have a great promotion deal, and Edison will want to keep coming back so that they could get the free basket of golf balls. These are my ideas for Edison working with a different company.

This experience is great for students and the community. This gives the students a foot in the door for further business with NASCAR and other sports related events. The team had to have time management and the ability to promote their event so that people actually came. This was easier then usual because they provided free food and a great experience.
ReplyDeleteIf Edison were to do something like this it would probably be with one of the Washington, DC franchises our we could do something with the minor league teams in the area. There is a minor league baseball team called The Cannons which could be a good opportunity. We could have a special promotion that our baseball team could play a game before they did so that many fans could see both teams play. There would be great food and the community could have a great time as well.

The importance of this experience is that students would be able to experience the world of NASCAR. They have the chance to see the real world behind the sports marketing. It can help get in the sports business by learning in a fun and entertaining style. IT would help you understand the meaning of the sports world.
ReplyDeleteIf the Edison marketing program partners with an area sports team or franchise, it would be something like, students volunteering for the sports team or franchise. Students would be able to work with the team and stuff to see how those people handle the sports world. They would have the chance to do the same things the stuff member of the sports team is doing, but not get paid for it. Students would have a great team getting to know how their life would be working for a famous sports team or franchise.

I think if you try new things you’ll get use to it. If you try new sports, you’ll see the joy it gives in. something a sport looks boring but once you try it, you’ll see why people play it. Nascar is one of those sport people find it to be boring. Others don’t consider it a sport, that’s why people don’t watch it.
ReplyDeleteI think Edison market can join a football franchise. The nfl brings idea so people can stay active. I think they will find a way to get us involve in it. The nfl has the play 60 distribution, where kids go out and play. They also have keep gym in school. I think Edison marketing can go to different schools around the community and fix up football fields, parks, and other recreational places.
The experience that those people had was groundbreaking. It gave students an opportunity to act and market a product in a way they never have before. Being allowed to market with a big company like NASCAR gives you real life marketing situations and can also help you gain connections from the people you meet in the industry. Many company employees could see what those students did, and if they liked their work they could end up giving them a job, and have one of those students work for them later in life. Also it’ll help get the students names out there and have a possibility to succeed as an employee of that company in the future.
ReplyDeleteSince Edison is only a high school we don’t have as much pull as most colleges do but there are still some franchises we could partner with. Such as McDonalds or even Powerade, McDonalds would most likely be a better choice because of the amount of them that are located around the school. One example could be that McDonalds wants to know a way to promote their new McRib. How would you propose to do it? Make a marketing plan to display your idea.

This opportunity is a good one for students because it gives them further knowledge of NASCAR. It enables them to get a head start and maybe a nudge into further business with the company. The team needed the time for management and the ability to promote their event so it gained peoples interest. It was easier for success because it offered free food.
ReplyDeleteIf our school were to do something like this it would most likely have to be in Washington D.C just because that is the closest “city”. We could probably do it with one of the teams there , maybe a minor league hockey team . We could promote the hockey team or have a promotion that gave fans the opportunity to see them play. Maybe have a t-shirt giveaway at the game so that people will be guaranteed to walk away with something in their pocket.
I think that this kind of experience is very important to the marketing industry because, it gives them a chance to really experience how the sports business works. Not only does it give them an experience, but it also gives them a better understanding of how the internal factors of sports marketing works. For some students, it will give them a chance to get a jump on their marketing career and focus more on what they should expect from this business. This kind of experience lets future students get a fit for what marketing skills, they will need to have to be successful in the marketing industry.
ReplyDeleteI think that if the Edison marketing department would like to be involved with a franchise or team that it should be either be a local area team that needs some type of publicity to help with their ratings. I think that the Edison marketing department should focus on a part of the franchise that will give their marketing participants the best experience that will help them on their future marketing journey. But with this being a hard task to accomplish, with these local teams being busy and are strained for time, I think that they would have to give the team or franchise something in return for their troubles. Overall I think that it would be a great idea for marketing departments to be involved in this kind or experience, and it would be a great experience for future marketing employees.

The experience that these young individuals had was one of a kind. It puts them on a different level when they graduate and are looking for jobs in the sports business industry. They learned marketing skills through this event. Even more importantly they developed contacts in the industry. Through their success in this event they have proven to have the skills necessary to be in the sports business industry.
ReplyDeleteThe Edison marketing program could do something similar in our area. Perhaps partnering with a major league team would be a little “out of our league.” Instead we could partner with a minor league team of some sorts to give the marketing students some experience in the competitive industry of sports business. The Edison program could design and make a game day program for a local team. This would help show how to best promote the team. It would give students the opportunity to get their feet wet in the sports and entertainment industry.
NASCAR is a very famous sports company. Marketing with them would be a great way to break into the marketing world. Getting involved with this would be very fun and helpful experience in life. This is helpful because being able to say that you participated in this is can get you were you want to go in life. That is why this is a helpful experience.

This could help Edison DECA because Redskins fans would hear about DECA and possible become interested in getting involved with us. Edison DECA could help the Washington Redskins because DECA members could become Redskins fan through the process. This would help both businesses a lot. This type of experience is important for students because it gives them more knowledge outside of the classroom. For students interested in business and marketing, this is a great opportunity. They have the chance to see how the world of marketing really is, and not just read about it. Some students might find they really enjoy this field and decide to pursue a career in it, others might discover that it’s truly not what they want to do. They may even land a job in doing so! It’s kind of like an internship in a way.
I think the Edison marketing program could have similar opportunities with local sports and franchises. D.C. United (MLS) , Washington Redskins (NFL), Washington Nationals (MLB), Washington Wizards (NBA), and Washington Capitals (NHL) are all really big sports franchises around here that we can team up with. I would personally choose the Washington Redskins because they are definitely the most popular of the group. We could send our DECA Leaders to FedEx field to see how operations are ran. We could also make a special package for any DECA member that wants to go to a game and all go together and advertise with our DECA shirts there, and possibly have a behind the scenes tour of the stadium prior to the game. It would be a really fun experience.
This looks like a great experience from what I’ve read. This is the type of thing that schools should focus on, instead of things like ‘factoring equations’ and learning when the War of 1812 was and stuff. These types of programs prepare students for the real world and give them job experience so they are ready for the workforce. I’m sure those students could get a job in that field because they have probably met many people who work in that industry that could probably find them jobs. Programs like that, such as DECA, should be made more common and more important. I think stuff like that should be the future of education. Not Algebra II.
ReplyDeleteThe Edison Marketing Program would benefit from partnering with local sports teams. Everyone’s first thought would probably be the Washington Redskins. Other teams that come to mind are the Washington Wizards and the DC United soccer team. But that might be hard to pull off. If we can’t make a partnership with a professional team, then we should try to partner with a minor league or amateur team the Richmond Braves baseball team or the Virginia Steelers football team. We could organize a viewing party like the students in the article did, to make an event where people gather to watch the game. That would attract more fans and viewers to those teams, and in return, those teams could help fund us, or sponsor us or something. We could also organize a “Day with the Team” activity where the winners of a school contest get to go hang out with a local team for a day. Another thing we could do is a field trip to a local stadium, just like the Baltimore field trip.

ReplyDeleteThis type of experience can help people break into the sports and entertainment world positively because it gives a quick initiative to starting your own event or product. This can make big level sponsors and corporations look at your event and maybe recruit you to help with advertising. Big sports teams will try anything to get more people to watch their team and this is a great way, by getting people to watch or learn for the first time. The students organized a viewing party for the NASCAR event to promote the race and provide a fun incentive to showing up.
If I could work with a local sports team to better enhance viewing numbers and interest among the population, I would work with the Washington Nationals. I saw the way people came to see Strasburg in large numbers, and I feel that more people would come to support the team if a baseball person informed the people of the big talent that the team was able to put together. If they sign a big name free agent, that would make the advertising a lot easier because there is a bigger name on the franchise. Aside from Zimmerman, Willingham, Strasburg, they have other big stars coming up like Jordan Zimmermann, number one overall pick Bryce Harper, and other big name prospect. All I would do is inform people of the potential the team would have if more people supported them.

I think this is a good experience so that they can know what it is like in nascar. So then they can get a better feel on the sport itself. This could also help the sport entertainment world by someone wanting to start their own business and product. Not just in nascar any other big sports like football or baseball. Other sports teams would like for people to this.

Like for the nationals they could have Strasburg marked and large numbers of people to come out and see him pitch. They could also go out and get carlos pena or Javier Vasquez and then big numbers would come out if you marketed they. Then if they start winning they could get some big numbers of fans maybe even sellout.If Bryce harper came up they would get big numbers of fans.

When you do nascar you are doing a sport too. Also you are going into the business of it too. because depending on what place you get in the race you can get a lot of money. Also you could qualify for something else. If you get 1st or 2nd in a race you could start in that position in the next race. I think that Edison marketing could partner with the Nationals. We already wear there colors and a lot of people like them. Also it would give people a chance to throw a baseball from the pitchers mound and they could let people hit the ball to see how far they could hit. By the Nationals letting us do that they would get a great Rep and it would help a lot of people in the marketing program learn and see how baseball is.

If I were to team up with something and make big plans and succeed in them, people would recognize me just like these intelligent students are. It important that things like this occur because it gets people to understand what the students are putting out and makes them pay attention to it more. Nothing gets bigger without advertisement and stuff. It’s important for these students because they have the opportunity to see what real world marketing is like.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be great for Edison to get into these events and team up with teams or franchises. We have many teams in the area that we could possibly team up with. The Washington Redskins, D.C. United, Washington Nationals, Washington Capitals are some of the major teams that would be great to team up with. It would be a great opportunity to team up with one and hold an event that broadcasts the team and has prizes to do something with the team or something.

This experience is going to help those students because some companies are going to start recognizing new people who can get the job done. Companies are always looking for new talent, and doing something like the NASCAR competition is very helpful. It gets you notice and maybe after you are done with college, you already have a good job. The NASCAR competition would also let you gain some experience in the real world. Because when you have a job, you know what you are doing.

Maybe they can let us do something similar like the NASCAR kinetics: Marketing in Motion. It would be a great experience to us that are planning to go to college.

This is a good tool to have in life especially in the business world. It is a good experience for young students.
ReplyDeleteFor the benefit of the Edison students in the marketing program it would be great if Edison partnered with the Washington wizards. Maybe students could attend games and conduct interviews with the players during half time or after the game. Students could even interview the coach. I think that would be a great way to tie fun with sports marketing.

Also if people enjoy doing it them more extreme sports will be created. The compeition are fun because the people who race they get in the game because its very extreme no one want to get hurt so they try as hard as they can to win it all with a clean sheat.
Edison soccer is not that big in this school i think because i just got here. If they focuse on soccer i think the Edison soccer team would be good. If edison can bring in like DC United or LA galaxe the kids would have be happy or may be have a little tournament and let the DC united coach then he can see kid that can be one of the stars for DC united.
I think this would be a good idea just because it would get people into different sports. It might give them a better understanding of the sport. This also a great idea to give people experience in the sports marketing field. Being apart of this event could also get people more interested in NASCAR.

This is important because it can give you whatever you need to succeed in the real world. I could learn so much in NASCAR, NBA, MLB, and even the NFL. You can never know everything, but with a program like this you can learn all that you need. With this information you could be a professional Better, and put money on who you think will win. That’s all there is to it. If you know the inner mechanics of the game, you could be a team owner, an agent for a big shot player, or anything related to the games. I feel that is the best way to learn, by putting real time into what you care about.
ReplyDeleteThe NFL could easily do something like this, and behind the scenes bettings could be a cinch if you have ambitious students researching for you. It could be amazing. The NFL could have some serious fun if they had a very good idea who would win the big game. The NFL could sponsor a short trip to games for lucky marketing students, and they would study at the stadium and come up with a good idea of the score at the end of the game. It would be just like that movie with Al Pacino and Matthew McC. It would be just like that. I would try to go to the first Chargers game of the year or the last. We could study the mechanics of the game and come up with real results.

ReplyDeleteIf I were a college student working on this I would help to try and promote NASCAR by increasing the amount or types for food and beer for people and to allow more of a fan predication in Nascar. I couldn’t or wouldn’t promote or make more crashes because that is dangerous for the drivers but I wouldn’t per say try to prevent more crashes. All of this is the way I would get fans to appreciate the sport of NASCAR more!
This type of experience is extremely ground breaking for someone just getting into the sports world. Not only will you most likely have your name in some sort of press and media, but it will achieve great connections, experience and you will also learn tons of things. By doing this instead of learning from a classroom you are actually doing it, for example, instead of being told how to hit a baseball, you actually go out and learn physically, and learn tricks of the trade that could help you with business decisions later in your career.
ReplyDeleteOne way the Edison Marketing Program could provide an experience just as eye opening and helpful as this is to not aim for the "big leagues", but often shoot for something like a Double A or Triple A team. These teams are often set out to be extremely fan friendly because they don't have starts to draw them to their parks. One example is the Potomac Nationals, a Double A baseball team that is recruited off of from none the less, the Nationals themselves. This franchise is extremely fan friendly and has many interactive ways to help fans, and teach them about their possible future careers in marketing.
NASCAR has been a big sports company for a while. Marketing with them would be a good way to get into the marketing world. Getting in to the NASCAR and that marketing side of the world will be very good. That is why this is a helpful experience.

This could help Edison DECA because we would advertise and such for the Redskins and maybe they would become interested in DECA and put DECA ads at their games. This would help both their business and DECA a lot. This is why Edison DECA should team up with the Redskins.
