Lucha Libre Video Game Gets Ready to Tackle U.S. Market

'Heroes del Ring' Introduces Americans to Storytelling Starring Masked Mexican Wrestlers

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- With the recent focus on Hispanic-targeted media and entertainment, one arena has remained largely untapped: video games. But that's about to change as "Lucha Libre AAA 2011: Heroes del Ring," a Mexican wrestling game from upstart publisher Slang, prepares to enter the ring next month.

"Heroes del Ring" is the largest video-game project to be conceived and created entirely in Latin America, and Slang is the first Mexican publisher of video games for the Xbox, PlayStation (PS3, Play Station Portable PSP), Wii and Nintendo DS consoles. Only 2% of characters in current video games are Hispanic, according to executives at the Vox Collective, the New York-based independent shop handling advertising for "Heroes," so this launch is a "cultural milestone," said Roberto Ramos, CEO and president of the Vox Collective.

In a 2 paragraph response (a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph), respond to the following questions.  "In order to get audiences excited about the sport, Vox has created three trailers in both Spanish and English that each tackle various aspects of the game: the storytelling element of lucha libre, the characteristics of the sport and the gamer's experience. Thirty-second spots will air on cable channels such as ESPN, SyFy, MTV, MTV2 and G4 starting next week, as well as on Hispanic media outlets".  In paragraph #1, discuss the marketing activities that Slang plans for this product. What are your thoughts?  Do you think the marketing will be successful here in the USA?  Why or why not?  Be specific with your thoughts.  In paragraph #2, discuss what you think will ulimately determine the success of Lucha Libre AAA 2011: Heroes del Ring in the USA.  Think about the 5 P's and the 9 functions of marketing. Be specific with your thoughts.

  1. I believe that the marketing techniques Slang plans for this product will be successful not only in the United States, but in Latin America as well. They have produced commercials that will reach out to all different people because they address all different aspects of the game. Any person that could have any possible key desire in buying this game will be pushed further with these commercials.

I believe that the ultimate outcome of Lucha Libre AAA 2011: Heroes del Ring in the USA will be a great seller. It will probably be progressively more popular after the prices decrease, although there will be some consumers that are so excited to play it that they will buy it the day it comes out. They are doing a great job advertising it with the different aspects of the game. Also, they are doing a good job by advertising their product in the country where the people there enjoy wrestling and will thus want to buy this game.

  2. The product, is mostly targeted for gamers, boys , wrestlers and boxers, will it succeed? Yes, it's just going to be another CallOfDuty or Hero game that are highly popular in the U.S due to the action and blood that it's going to have but not only will it be successful in the U.S , but Latin America as well.

I agree with Roberto Ramos comment about the product being launched known as a "cultural milestone"- It was a good idea for Vox to create three different type of trailers to advertise the product in different languages since the U.S is a multi-speaking country and by reaching the Latin community.

Using MTV, MTV2 and ESPN as their cable channels to promote the game was a smart move since ALOT of people watch them, espicially ESPN since it's Football Season.

  3. This article is about a new video game. It is a a game called Lucha Libre somewhat like WWE. I feel that the marketing Slang plans will be somewhat successful in the United states only becuase it a game just like WWE. The WWe games have been around for awhile now. More people are going to go with a game that they know is good and not take a shot with a game they dont know about.

I feel that game will not make as big of a hit as WWe just becuase it is new and many poeple are going to stick with WWE. If The game out sells WWE it will be becuase they have better promotions and ads. The Chance of this in my eyes is small. If there wasnt all ready a game out just like it would make alot more money. If they took the game to a country that doesnt have a WWE game it would make alot more money then it wil in the USA.

  4. The marketing technique used by Slang is to pretty much advertise through mass media and online. They plan to release the game on 5 different consoles which will hopefully distribute there game in the video game industry. Marketing in the U.S. will be successful because there is a huge audience of video gamers in the U.S. alone. Everyone you know owns some sort of console so the word of mouth would spread. The video game industry is big so they wouldn’t have a problem advertising and promoting the game because of the audience.

Slang supports the five P’s and 9 Functions of marketing because they follow these guidelines. They have a certain target market in which they appeal to video games young and old and the Hispanic group. They also emphasize there promotions through TV-spots on big name channels which are video by people who have interest in sports and such. There distribution is also effective because they not only focus on one platform but multiple platforms from various companies which compete with on another. Lucha Libre AAA 2011: Heroes del Ring in the USA will succeed here in the U.S.

  5. The video game looked cool from what I was able to see in the trailer. I think they should show more of the game play in the trailer. By the using the real fighters it makes the trailer more interesting. But as far as the video game goes the lack of video game play in the trailer may affect some gamer out there. I think the video game would do well in the U.S. since its something new and a little more interesting then the WWE. That is also a risk since its something new then maybe people would be reluctant to spend the 60 dollars for it. So it’s either sink or swim for the video game.

Ultimately I think that sales would determine how successful the video game will be. In the business of distributing I think the only way to determine success is by sales. Or maybe the company has some type of goal in mind since the U.S. isn’t use to a game like this one. The Spanish community could help with the support of these video games. Cause maybe they don’t get luchalibre in their certain state. If the company picks up on their advertising then maybe could have great success with this game in the U.S. market. But they cant rely on just the Spanish community to help with the support of the game. They need state wide support.

  6. This product created by Slang, is a wonderful idea. He plans to market this game in the usa.He uses words in Hispanic. Also advertise it in channels such as MtV, Syfy, ESPN, all these channels are channels that young teens watch and would be great for advertising this new game. I think this marketing will be successful because people want to see something new, and play something new.
I think Lucha Libre will be successful ultimately because of the way it is advertising itself the commercial has many catching frases and the scenery is great. Also the price of the game will be affordable especially because many teens have wii and ps3 which they play. This type of product is different because you rarely see advertising with Spanish words in them and a Hispanic video game. The place in which they are advertising this game are channels in which the teens watch because I watch them, and the commercial will catch the eye of the viewers.

  7. I think that Lucha Libre could be a successful video game. The marketing decisions that Vox has made actually make complete sense. They are the same decisions as any big named video game company. For example EA Sports is a huge video game company and they always market their new sports games on ESPN. I think their game could succeed in the US but it would probably strike the attention of people interested in non-US wrestling like WWE and WWF.
The majority of people that will be interested in this game will probably speak Spanish. The best place to market this game would probably be in Hispanic cultures. The product needs to have some kind of deal where if you reserve the game you can receive a Lucha Libre T-Shirt when you pick up the game. The price of the game should be less than the regular $60 because that wouldn’t be good for the new game. They should continue to promote the game in all the ways they have been promoting.

  8. The marketing strategies the Slang will use is, they will advertise on T.V. channels such as ESPN, and G4. The people that would probably watch those channels would be young adults and teens, therefore appealing to the target market that they want. I think that this is a smart idea because they don't want old people to buy the game, because they would not play it half the time. I think that the marketing in the U.S. will be successful because a lot of people like W.W.E., and they would like the change to a new product. Also if they have more trailers about the actual game play then they will be anticipating/waiting for the game to come out.

I think that the true success of Lucha Libre will depend on the actual game play of the game. People who know a lot about games know that the game play and the online play is the most important part of the game. You can advertise all you want but, in the end the true value and goodness of the game reflects the gameplay.

  9. The marketing activities that Slangs plans for this product are to encourage Mexican and Latin Americans to play this game and experience some of their culture. They also made trailer in Spanish and in English to get not only Latin Americans to play the game, but also other people with different cultures and languages. I think this game is going to be successful not only in Latin America but in the U.S.

I think this game is going to be success because a lot of people in the U.S like to watch and play WWE and this game is no different from that. The creator of this game have their focus on young males because their most interested in fighting than females. Another reason why this games is going to be successful is because is the only game launched in America that is Latin related, and a huge part of the U.S an Latin Americans

  10. Marketing techniques that Slang plans for this product is very good and they will be successful in the U.S and Latin America. The commercial are very creative and precise and looks more creative then the WWE wrestling in the U.S. It is also good that slang is putting the game on all the gaming consoles such as Xbox and PSP. The game is mostly targeted to young boys and teenagers, which is a large gaming population, so the game indeed will be successful.
The Ultimate success of Lucha Libre AAA 2011 will be that it will out do the WWE wrestling in the U.S because it is different and more eye catching and young boys will be more attracted to it, they are doing a good job in advertising it, and they also choose the U.S to market it because their target market is young boys and the US has a lot of young gamers.
