Sports Marketers Challenged To Sell In New Landscape

From CNBC, Sportsbiz

What intrigued me most about taking in the IMG Sports Marketing Symposium in New York City today was that — from all external signs — sports marketing has never been in better shape.

People are watching live sports in numbers that measure up against pre-Internet era consumption. For all the talk about fragmentation, fans are forgoing the DVR, flipping on Facebook or Twitter on a side device and tuning in to sports, en masse. New technology is enabling phenomenal new and exciting levels of interaction between fans and sports (with marketers finding a place within the medium).

In a 2 paragraph response (a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph), respond the following questions.  In paragraph # 1, what do you think of the word and concept “Eventize” as it applies to current sports marketing trends.  Do you think this concept is what consumers are looking for?  Why or why not?  Be specific with your thoughts.  In paragraph # 2, tell me about your favorite sport (cannot use the NFL or College Football because it is already discussed in the article) and what technolically unique marketing strategies it is using to attract new fans/customers and retain existing ones.  Do you think they are acutally working?  Be specific with your thoughts.

  1. Eventize means that there is events going on that are of importance to people. Events are set up for people to watch and be entertained by. When you "eventize" something i think it means that you make it public and appealing to certain groups of people. Football events show commercials that gain the viewers attention like during the superbowl. The commercials are funny and appeal to us as viewers.
I watch the world cup as my favorite sport. They have commercials that are good for people watching the world cup by advertising cleats and gear to soccer players by seeing them on the soccer players. If you want to be like your favorite soccer player you wear the colors and the gear. They adveretise the world cup as a big deal. Countries all over the world come together to play soccer, a pretty intense sport. I think that this is working well, the advertisments for the world cup. They are attracting more customers and keeping their old ones.

  2. Eventize is a great way to make money, get the name out and promote a company. This is exactly what consumers are looking for. Consumers want to be able to see special events. Since the event is special, promotions and advertising of the event would be put on tv, the internet and radio. This draws an even larger crowd to watch the event. When an event is special, its usually put on local channels, for everyone to be able to see. If an event requires you to pay to watch or requires you to subscribe to a certain channel, the event starts to drastically lose its consumers.

My favorite sport is soccer. Soccer has a great way of marketing its products. Their clothing products, like shoes. About 75% of all players, who played in the world cup, wore the new Nike mercurial vapors. This was a great was of showcasing Nike’s new shoe. FIFA also has a great way of selling their soccer balls. Every year, each league in FIFA, plays with a new soccer ball. When these soccer balls are named to a league, they are sold in all the soccer stores. Fans want to wear the shoes the pros are wearing and they want to get the soccer ball that all the famous leagues are playing with. FIFA knows how to sell its products and it shows with the amount of profit they receive.

  3. the concept eventize is used for big time event. Wrestlemania is an example how eventize used they create commercial to persuded you to order it. another thing they do to make more money is they put in on pay per view instead on a local listing.if people start thing if we have to pay to see this, this must be a good match. sometimes what they would do is they will "hype" a match up.
my favorite sport, other than football is soccer. the way they attract fans are the players are in commercials tellig you to see the game. while your watching the game when someone scores they say "GOAL". the way they say goal makes people excited. if your favorite player is on a commercial and telling you to go see him play you would so reputation is a big factor.

  4. I think the word "Eventize" means to turn something that isn't an event, into an event. It applies to current sports marketing trends because everything now-a-days is an event or a product. The NFL has been turning things like saturday night football into a competitive opponent to monday nights. I think "Eventizing" is what the consumers want, because they want to be entertained. College football being "Eventized" is good for the fans because it becomes fan-friendly, and more then a game.

MLB is using many different techniques to "Eventize" their games. At the new Washington Nationals stadium there is a Playstaion area where you can play games like, MLB The Show, or Gran Turismo. This gives consumers and fans an alternitive to watching the game, and a different reason to come back to the stadium. I do think they're working, because my neighbor won a PS3 by competing at the Playstaion area, and he goes to more than half the Nats games to try and win more stuff.

  6. To me the word eventualize has a meaning of to change something that isnt a event. this goes to current . this goes to current marketing trends. Its either an event product. Thus the nfl has been putting things like Saturday night football on the air and television. Monday night football is becoming a big competitor in the league of challenges. People changing the way they watch sports. They are going from their DVR to watching it on twitter and facebook from their devices this is very new and interesting. Thus the sports entertainment industry is becoming bigger or more massive on a global scale at a very fast rate. Thus one can see how the sports entertainment and sports itself is changing!

  7. The phrase “Eventize” means to me that a corporation is hyping up a sports event. There are many factors that coincide with this term such as advertisements and brand names. This type of entertainment is good for the consumer because this “event” is more than just a game. Consumers these days want everything bigger, bigger names, bigger plays, bigger drink sizes, so the eventize concept does and will continue to work. Sports are always live while watching live or on tv so it is always exciting.

Hockey is a sport that can be very fun! In the Washington DC area the Capitals have been amazing to watch the past few years! Big names such as Alex Ovechkin help sell tickets but the big arena and contest keep the atmosphere exciting. The fans love it! Watching on tv is just as fun because you see so many people in the stands. I can not wait to go to another Caps game!

  8. Eventize is basically the making of a game into a huge event. Every year games are watched more and more because there’s more to it then just sports now. This is a great boost for sports marketing because it gives companies a chance to advertise more. Consumers want it too, because more fun stuff on top of the game, entertains them even more during that period of time when they watch it.

One of my favorite sports is Lacrosse. Over the past few years, it’s been getting way more popular. It’s spreading from the east coast to the west coast. It’s a talented sport and if you are good, you can make it into good colleges but the thing is if you want to play when you’re older, you don’t make much money playing professional. It hasn’t attracted much attention yet with advertising and other methods but it’s getting there. In about the next ten years the sports should be broadcasted on TV on many stations just like today’s NFL.

  9. The word Eventize is a concept that turns a normal game or activity into a large event that is known across the country and gets more viewers for being big. This is what users are looking for because when you eventize something you are making it seem great or add a twist to it which gets viewers more into the show or game. This is what consumers are looking for because it always allows them to have a change in experience or have something big or new in the game. Eventize can be summed up in a way for sports to engage fans more than just putting up a game or show but an attempt to make it twice as good.

My favorite sport is baseball, baseball participates in Eventizing their games and stadiums as well. Special things that baseball does during a game to eventize includes many things such as a t -shirt toss which is often done in-between innings to directly engage with fans. The 7th inning stretch is another well known and common way to engage and eventize with fans during baseball games, it is a way to get everyone together to sing and sometimes the stadium will have a known celebrity lead the singing. Baseball also has an honorary first pitch every game that goes to an organization and every opener in Washington the president will come out and throw it. Baseball is extremely well known for interacting with their fans and keeping things going.

  10. I think that “Eventize” does make a concept on the current sports, because there are more people into sports and knowing more about sports. I also think that, that is what the consumers are looking for. The reason why is because they are making big games more exciting. Also they are trying to televise it more by making the games more exciting.
My favorite sport is soccer. Soccer tries to bring the crowed by mostly putting up rivals against each other and making big news about the players that are playing. They also make progress by selling new shoes like cleats or indoor shoes, sponsored by Addias or Nike. I think that it is working because soccer is a world played sport.

  11. The word “Eventize” means to make a game more exciting, to make a game a special event. The concept is to add some cool stuff to the game to make the consumer feel like it was worth their money. For instance, if they put in a superb half time show to entertain the fans, then they will leave on a positive note and want to come back for more. Some more things that they can do are create games that people can come down and try and play for prizes. This way the consumers will feel like it was a great way to spend their money, tell all their friends about it, and want to come back.

Soccer is not that big of a sport in the United States, but it is the biggest sport throughout the world. Soccer teams do not use that much as a marketing strategy other then come to the game and watch, but one thing that they do is if you get to the game early, or stay after for a longer time, then they will give you their autograph. Throughout the world, some things soccer does to make people want to come back are shirt cannons. They shoot shirts out into the audience, so that people are real excited. I believe that these strategies are working, but it would probably be smarter for them to try something new and more exciting. This way, the consumers will think they will change it up every time and want to come back for more.

  12. I think it’s great. It’s exactly what the industry needs. It really does boost interest in sports. By turning the average game into an ‘event,’ you really build enthusiasm for it. It makes people excited, and it makes them talk about it more. The more cool things there are in the ‘event,’ the more likely people will remember it and keep coming back for more. It’s exactly what the customers are looking for. More bang for their buck.

My favorite sport is skateboarding. They skateboarding industry has been taking major leaps forward recently. One thing is that in the past, companies would release feature-film length skate films about every 4 years on VHS, and then later DVD format. Now, instead of that 4-year cycle, some companies are releasing short clips of individual skaters every week. It takes away from the ‘team’ aspect of the DVD releases as those had at least 5 to 7 people on a video. But this way the fans can get more content, more often. Another thing that’s new is that a pro-skater, Rob Dyrdek, is creating his own skateboarding league. This is the first official skateboarding league since the National Skateboarding Association in the 80’s. This brings more structure to skateboarding and it makes it easier for new fans to understand or watch skateboarding. It’s easier to ‘consume.’

  13. I think Eventizing is big in helping bring in consumers. Eventize is something hard to describe in a simple definition but easier to describe in an example. The NFL has the Superbowl every year, but that is not Eventizing. Eventizing is to make events big. Like week 3 of college football is nothing special I mean there will be big games but that happens every week. Eventizing is the pregame show that welcomes people and excites the crowd in every which for the game. It’s not all about going to the game. It’s what they do to make you not want to change the channel to a different show or to another game.
Baseball is one of the few sports that is slow paced and moving but has tons of fans that watch the games religiously. They televise the games on TV obviously not every game because they play 162 games a season more than any other sport does. But when it comes to the postseason they play nearly every game whether it is on ESPN, TBS, or FOX. Many things that baseball does to bring in new fans is some of their commercials for specific players and baseball video games. Also ESPN has things like baseball tonight which is all about baseball or the MLB network which broadcasts only baseball. I think they are working because baseball has many fans for their sport and are probably the second most watched American sport behind football.

  14. I think that eventize is what fans are looking for. It goes beyond a simple game, it tries to make part of the game. When I watch a game, I want to feel part of the game, and as a costumer that is what I'm looking for. As a fan, i want to get the best thing for the time I'm watching the game. I think this new way of marketing is what new people who are staring to whatch the games is what they are looking for.

One of my favorite sports is soccer. i think that fifa is not trying to do much to attract new fans/comsumers. soccer is followed everywhere is the world, so it does not need a lot of marketing. but having the world cup really helps people who

  15. Eventize is a verb that has recently been brought up by Millercoors. This word means to make something be more like a larger event. To eventize the sports industry is to make more of an event out of a game. To eventize is to make the game have more entertainment value, to make the game more of an event for all people. This is the concept consumers are looking for. It adds more to the game experience and this is exactly what the consumer wants.
In the world of college lacrosse games are beginning to become televised. College lacrosse games are shown on ESPNU. During these games many of lacrosse’s biggest stars can be seen in commercials supporting lacrosse products. To attract more people to the games commercials showing fancy and exciting goals are aired. It must be working because lacrosse is the fastest growing sport at the moment. The game is becoming more and more popular at all levels.

  16. I think the word “eventize” means to show off a certain team. I think it’s a word that is mostly used in the NFL or in other football leagues, because of the fact that in football a lot of things are advertised and showed off to the fans to buy and entertain and football is bigger in USA than any other sport. I think that this concept is what consumers are looking for, because they want to see more entertainment in what they are looking at. When the consumers see what the league is selling or showing for entertainment they are going to want to buy the product or maybe get into more then they already are. I think that consumers want to see more entertainment from there league and make it more popular then it already is.
My favorite sport is soccer. In soccer what they do is, they advertise most of their products in sports magazines and sports channels. For example, D.C United has their own commercial in CSN to advertise what their next game is at home and making the new fans and existing ones come out, buy the tickets and enjoy the game. They also advertise a lot of their products through the internet, through their website. I think that their marketing strategies are and are not working, because in some ways they are getting the fans to buy more of the jerseys, but in some ways since they have been losing almost all of their matches, new and existing fans don’t really want to come out to the games, because maybe they don’t want to waste their money on a game that they might lose too.

  17. I think that this concept of making a event bigger than normal, is a good idea profit wise. Because when you are able to bring fans in not just on the fact that its their favorite team playing, but that there's something special going on too. I think that consumers have been waiting for something like this for awhile now, because its something that consumers can use to add that specical factor to a event that already has something big to it.
In the game of college basketball, they use pre-game shows and pre-game insiders to get you ready and intrested in the game your about to watch. Its sort of like college basketball and football are sort of the same when it comes to the "eventize" factor. I think that eventize plays a bigger factor in college than professional football. But either way, eventizing anything in the means of sport, will be a very big thing.

  18. I think fans to all the sports are waiting for the event to happend. In sports they really dont plan it only the Super Bowl, Championship games and etc. But the teams that make it that far isnt planned they work to get in that position, by winning the games they have during the season. Then the fans that buy the tickets they are expecting to have fun & the game be more exciting then its supposed to be. Then the fans that cant afford a ticket they watch it on TV and most likely are only watching that game.

The NBA, theres lots of players who have commericials with gatorade, nike and other advertisments. I think thats what fans look at to enjoy basketball (the commercials on tv). Then theres alot of fans who like individual players and they are very famous. Whenever the chapionship and nba all star events come its so FAMOUS. Its like all over the place, and they make it huge.

  19. I think that Eventize means that not-so-big events can be blown out of proportion and become the size of such events as the super bowl. Like an average game can be made to be a huge one. Its easy to believe with all the hype about all the games everywhere. It means that fans can be the ones cheering for the 'game of the year'. It makes everyone happy, and that is exactly what eventize means.

I would say tennis is a favorite to me. I like the way they advertise everything makes me want to stay tuned to the game. I think they draw plenty of people from other sports into theirs with their ads. Also with eventize. The Australian Open is just as popular as any NFL game but with much more hype. It is working, because I still watch it and i can get bored so easily. But I still stick with the programming and watch it as history is made.

  20. I think that the work is difficult for people to understand and to tell what it means. The concept of "Eventize". I think that it is what the costumers are looking for in a game. It doesn't make it such a boring game if there team was losing or just not doing well.

My favorite sport is football. Then i like to watch college basketball. My favorite team is Duke blue devils. The college level of marketing is cool because they offer free stuff. The NBA level offers more expensive and better item but still equal. I think that them advertising certain things like that will help them get more people going to there games.

  21. Eventize is when you things out there like football game or any other sport is important to people. Then they put it out there for people to watch like on tv or to go to the game. They would show this when they make commericals for it like monday night football. they show a mad guy getting ready for it thats what i think it is.
My favorite sport is baseball i think they go out and show the best games of the week. Like this week they showed the philloies and the braves twice this week and i bet alot of people turned it on. they also put out commericals to tell people about the game before it happens

  22. I think eventize is to turn a normal event like an average event in to a special event. One way this is done is instead of having a marching band perform at halftime have a performance done by a famous artist. A lot of eventized event s is sponsored. Like at Nationals Park they gave out free hats to kids. This was sponsored by a company and there company name was written on the back or every hat. This is a great way for businesses to get out there word to potential customers.
My favorite sport is baseball. At Nats game they give away lots of prizes. And if you get bored there is a playground! There are also a batting cages and a place where you can clock your pitches. Baseball have also included restaurant in there stadiums.

  23. I think that the word “Eventize” means that small events can be made a big deal. This is very possible now because of new technology. With modern technology everybody can watch everything you can watch sports highlights on NFL Zone and know about everything that happened. Technology also makes it easy to watch games that aren’t in you area. That is what I think that “eventize” means.

My second favorite sport is basketball. I think that they do advertise themselves very well. There players do a lot of advertisement which brings attention to the league. Also they do extra events like the 3 point shootout and the slam dunk competition. But I do think that they could try a little harder to get new fans.

  24. S.E.M. BLOG #3
    Joey Dolan

The question that will be answered in the following blog is “What do you think of the word ‘Eventize’ and how it is used in the sports marketing world?” I believe it has a huge impact on the sports and entertainment marketing world because leagues, sponsors, advertisers, etc. all use big events to promote their product or service. Many of the big sporting events that marketers get their brand shown on include the Super Bowl (Football), World Series (Baseball), Stanley Cup (Hockey), NBA Finals (Basketball), Masters (Golf & Tennis) and other. Music and Video events include the Grammys, Espys, Golden Globes, Emmys, and the Oscars. The main idea of those events is that many people watch them and will get their brand put in there any way they can do it, translating into revenue and resources teams and leagues use to up the entertainment value. So after the elongated previous paragraph, yes, I do think “Eventize” is the proper term.

This next paragraph is about my favorite sport, Baseball, and how it uses events to promote marketing. Major League Baseball has done a lot to better the promotional advertising and campaigning for many top corporations. In the past few years, in order to better sports marketing in their field, MLB has: created their own national network and website (MLB.com/MLB Network), signed with national networks for postseason coverage (ESPN/FOX/TBS), and signed away advertising space on their own networks (MLB Quick Pitch presented by Pizza Hut/ Coors Light Cold Hard Blast/ etc.), and shown the fans that baseball is still America’s pastime. Baseball is still America’s game and has made it an event by using television and internet a way to bring big games and playoffs into every persons grasp as a fan. This blog further shows how sports marketing is centered on “Eventizing.”

  25. Eventize means to basically make a game into a Massive event. Making these events bigger than they are usually makes fans excited to watch and get involved. I think that people like it when an event is eventized because it makes it more exciting. Its a good marketing strategy because it brings out more than just the game, it puts a hype on the event.
My favorite sport is Track and Field. I believe that Events like Nationals are Eventized because they are Hyped by giving away Nike Nationals bags to all the athletes and alot of publicity is there. Also at nationals they have events for kids which is a huge deal because not all sports involve kids. That is a great marketing strategy because it attracts the youth which attracts parents.

  26. NBA china
The fans got a big opportunity to see players that are amazingly and also they can be hoping their team can pull of a win. The promotion is that they will get drinks, food and other staff from the food store around there. Other thing is that the people are going to pay more because they are in front of the players. I think they will like it if they made something that has never been done before. I think the big promotion that fans will is that if they give like some fancy thing that goes with the game.
I think the right way for them is the china team to play good and on the other time to make the promotion way better and make the fans like basketball and make them go to the games every week so basketball can became more popular. Also if koby, labron, and all the good players to go china.
