Marketing 1 Blog Assignment # 3 (25 points)

MTV Refocuses Their Brand and Experiences Highest Ratings in Over a Decade

Brian Rice, Business 2 Community

Recently, I read Forbes’ list of brands that are slated to make a comeback in 2011 and it got me thinking about which brand has had the most successful rebranding campaign in the past 10 years.  After much thought I came to the conclusion that no other brand was more successful than MTV.  After MTV dropped music videos completely from their television lineup, many questioned whether MTV would ever regain the buzz they once enjoyed during the days of Carson Daly hosting “Total Request Live”.

Growing up as teenager during the height of “TRL”, we didn’t have Facebook, Twitter or even YouTube, so MTV was “the spot” for the hottest music videos.  MTV may have helped the music video become relevant but there is no questioning the fact that television is no longer the medium of choice for consuming these videos.  YouTube dominates this space now and the rise of social media has made sharing these videos with friends even easier (my future children will never believe that we use to have to wait until lunch time to talk about the “Top 10 videos of the day”).

In a 2 paragraph response (a minimum of 5 sentences for each paragraph), answer the following questions.  In paragraph # 1, provide your thougthts on the MTV brand.  Knowing what you know about MTV, relect on the changes the brand has experienced over the years.  Do you think MTV is heading in the right direction?  Why or why not?  Are they providing a product that is satisfying the needs and wants of their target audience?   Why or why not?  Be specific with your thoughts.

In paragraph # 2, picture yourself as the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) MTV.  What would be 2 changes to the product that you would put in place NOW in order to meet the needs and wants of consumers?  Talk about each change and why you would make these changes to the product.  Be specific with your thoughts.

In paragraph # 2, discuss your opinion on the process leading up to the trade.  Do you think there had been to much focus on the trade by the media?  Yes or no? Why?  Should the NBA institute some type of rule that would limit in-season trades?  Yes or no?  Why? Has this whole process been good or bad for the NBA brand and it's image?  Why?  Be specific with your thoughts.

Sony Unveils the NGP, the Next Evolution of Portable PlayStation Hardware

By Evan Narcisse on January 27, 2011

As widely expected, Sony debuted their next mobile gaming device earlier today in Japan. Rumors have run hot and heavy over the last few months about what the so-called and elements of the PlayStation Meeting presentation have borne out some of the speculation.

Codenamed NGP for Next Generation Portable, the handheld sports two analog joysticks, a purported first for such a gaming system. It also boasts a five-inch OLED touchscreen and a corresponding touch panel on the rear of the unit. The NGP's looks harken back to the first Playstation models, while The 3G connectivity that was first reported last year gets paired up with WiFi to create an ideally seamless online experience. Games (and presumably other content) will live on a new Flash cartridge format, which will co-exist in conjunction with digital distribution methods. The NGP's elongated oval look harkens back to the industrial design of the earliest PSP model, leaving the flat, compact aesthetics of the PSPGo to languish.

A Piece of the Action

Advertisers see opportunity in extreme sports

By James Sullivan
Boston Globe Correspondent / January 20, 2011

The marketing staff at Paul Mitchell, the hair products maker, like to say — only half in jest — that their motto is “We run with scissors.’’

That kind of wry humor may help explain why John Paul Mitchell Systems Inc. is a charter sponsor of the Winter Dew Tour, the extreme-sports competition that arrives at Killington Resort in Vermont today for its only East Coast stop of 2011.

For the Beverly Hills, Calif., company, which also is a sponsor of the US national snowboard and ski teams, the Winter Dew Tour is an opportunity to sell to an active-youth market that spends an estimated $150 billion a year on outdoor equipment and other goods.

In paragraph # 2, the article also talks about one athelete "looks for potential sponsors that will support his sport with long-term commitments, not just try to buy into some of its buzz."  What does this mean and how might it differ from other sports?  Lastly, what is your general assessment of the marketing strategies being used by the Dew Tour?  What do you like, dislike, and why?Be specific with your thoughts.

By,  Linda TischlerFri Jan 14, 2011
